Can our school submit our Top-25 songs before the dance?
Yes. We need these 7 business days before your dance.
What is your mission statement?
It is our duty to shake the planet's booty.
What type of music do you play?
If you can dance to it, we play it.
Do you have school friendly edited versions of popular tracks?
Yes.
What type of Sound Equipment do you use?
We use some of the same sound equipment bands like The Rolling Stones toured with. If it's good enough for them, its good enough for us. We use top of the line gear. ElectroVoice, DBX, QSC, Technics, Yamaha, Pioneer, etc.
What type of Lighting do you bring?
Varies on the show and what you have booked. Lighting can be very basic to extremely sophisticated, similar to what you see at your favorite concert. In fact, we have done lighting for everything from Canadian Idol to Calgary ZooLights. Our head lighting technician toured with Mathew Good for 10 years and designed the Mamma Mia! tour lighting. We also use the same lighting equipment Michael Jackson toured with. No other DJ service in Alberta has the lighting expertise that we do. We can completely transform your venue. The proof is in the pudding so take a look at our PIX! [click].
Why should we hire you?
You hate empty dance floors as much as we do.
Do you have discounts?
If you book 3 or more events per year, that is an automatic 10% off. If you are on our mailing list, you will be notified via email of price specials.
I don't see your prices listed?
You gotta call us or submit for a quote. Every client/event is different.
Do you play from Laptops?
No. In our humble opinion, real DJs don't use laptops. Why? The sound quality is questionable and laptops freeze up randomly. Neither of which we find acceptable and nor should you.
Do you do Video Dances?
Yes. We have all the latest videos.
Do you have video projection equipment available?
Yes. Projectors, screens, video mixers.
Top-10 best ways to tick off your crew:
- Failing to check power requirements.
- Forgetting to mention our name on the posters.
- Making a poster that looks like a 5 year old did it.
- The room/gym/hall/club was not prepped for us.
- Canceling an event after selling tickets and/or advertising our good name.
- Faxing the Top-25 song list in the day of or the day before your show.
- Having a small group of guests pick songs out for all other guests.
- Treating us like other DJ companies.
- Not putting your heart into promoting YOUR event.
- Having gym class while we are trying to setup!
May we submit a song list in advance?
You may submit a Top-25 song list only. There are rules about this so please ask.
Top-5 reasons school dances bomb:
- Poor planning
- Booked a cheap DJ
- Unprofessional marketing
- A really ugly poster
- The last one sucked so this one will too!
Can we cancel if we don't sell enough tickets?
NOOO! Absolutely not! No one plans to fail, they fail to plan. If you don't sell enough tickets, then you've missed an important step somewhere and you should consider it a learning experience, just like any business. It is innapropriate to book a DJ/band/performer/artist and then cancel for anything other than WWIII. Professional DJs/crew can turn down other events to do your school and it is simply not fair to them. Imagine trying to cancel building a new house AFTER the foundation has been poured ... HOWEVER... We do allow you to postpone an event to within 30 days of the previous event date without penalty.
Truthfully, why would you hire a DJ service if you thought the event might be cancelled? A truly professional DJ service would never agree to such a thing without some type of significant compensation.
Do you take requests?
Not exactly, but we happily take song suggestions. If it doesn't bite and you can dance to it, we might play it. Yeah, it's subjective and we have final say in what we play. For example, we are not likely going to play a track that only 5% of the school likes or knows.
Who are some of your clients/events we might know?
Calgary Police Service, McDonald's Restaurants, Sunshine Village, Calgary ZooLights, Pride, The City Of Airdrie, Tommy Lee, Canadian Idol, etc.
Will you DJ my wedding?
Yes. As you can imagine, our weddings are pretty darn cool and you should be too if you are even remotely considering hiring us. We dress nice and everything. You can expect tasteful, elegant and hella fun!
For typical weddings, we recommend you contact: Phoenix Wedding DJ Serivces [click!]
Do you do Bar/Bat Mitzvahs?
Yes. You get to hear your favorites, however the no sucky music rule applies.
Do your DJs give away prizes?
Not as a trick to get you to hire us. We may randomly give out useful prizes, if we like you. Prizes don't make people come to your event. Good music, sound, lighting and proper advertising does though. Unless you are giving away something really awesome, say a trip to Disneyland, prizes are quite frankly useless. For ages, it has been a trick of DJs to offer prizes as an inducement to hire them, usually because they need all the help they can get. We give away useful things like Calgary Zoo and Talisman Sports Center passes.
Do you offer DJ classes or DJ School?
We offer free training in lieu of paid courses. If we think you could have 'the right stuff', we will take you out on between 4-6 events for evaluation/try-outs. After this evaluation period is over, we will determin if we are prepared to offer you contract work. You get to learn from real DJs and crews in action. Its the only way.
What is Intelligent Lighting?
Intelligent lighting is used extensively on concerts and in major nightclubs. In short, it is lighting fixtures that take instructions from a computer-like controller. In this case, Intelligent really means 'good at following instructions'. Different light fixtures have different features so an 'intelligent light show' really means nothing until you get down to the nuts and bolts of it. Lets just say if it doesn't arrive in a cube truck, it "prolly ain't nothing to write home about." Our intelligent lighting has been used on major artist's tours.
What are Intellabeams and Technobeams?
Just about the most freakin cool light f/x you could get at your event. Everyone from Michael Jackson to Rush has used these lights on major tours. Should rock your event, eh! Yes they cost extra, but you're worth it, right? Read up on them [Link].
What is your cancellation policy?
The majority of schools asking this question are usually not serious about throwing a proper event and assume they can cancel for whatever reason, including low ticket sales. Once you have booked us, it is pretty much a done deal. If you make a mistake in your dates, or didn't sell enough tickets (not marketing properly), you are likely out of luck. You can easily book less professional services that will take any booking, just not us. We could have done another school / client's event who was properly organized so you will end up paying us in full either way. Go hard or go home! You will only lose your deposit if you give us at least 3 weeks notice. The moment you advertise the event or sell the first ticket, there is no going back so make sure you are serious about it.
In short, please only book us if you are 110% serious about having an awesome show.
We have tried hiring TV/radio stations, etc., but students arn't coming to the dances, why?
Have you tried polling your student's favorite bands? Video channels and Radio Stations play an 'average' of music tastes designed for listening too. If you go to any dance club in the city, it won't sound like a radio/tv station at all. There is music for listening and there is music for dancing. Unless your school is VERY average (as in boring), why would you want 'average' at your special event? You might think that a well known radio/tv station will get more students out, but the polish wears off real fast. For instance, radio stations have a music director that picks out what tracks they play, the DJs don't pick out the music. Radio DJs are just announcers, not usually floor packing DJs. As well, when you hire a radio station, they are not supposed to play tracks that only 'other' radio stations play. With the diversity of your school's music tastes, it is no wonder student's become disinterested. Just playing RnB the whole dance would get pretty boring for those students who like to rock out or bust some serious moves to the hottest dance track.
Our school dances have kinda sucked, students won't buy tickets, how can we change this?
School Dances are our specialty. We know what makes a successful event. Students will buy tickets to their favorite concert so you must make your events more appealing. Step it up a notch as they say... It is strictly a matter of supply and demand. Your past event history plays an important role in future event success. A school that is known for awesome events has a much easier job selling tickets for future events.
Schools often assume a radio station or tv video station will be the best choice. We prove that wrong all the time. Schools are also notorious for booking the cheapest DJ they can find. This never works out because all DJs are not equal. The same goes for the most expensive DJ as well. The Dance Committee must do their research and homework.
In summary, you have to make a radical change to your events, specifically the way you organize, plan, promote/market and execute. It is A LOT of work, but it will be worth it. Please read our Event Promotion page [click] document for planning/marketing tips.
How do we compare DJ companies?
There are several criteria we suggest using when shopping for DJs. Some items to consider:
- References?
- Years in business?
- # of events completed?
- Submit advance music suggestions?
- Brands and models of equipment?
- Using the same equipment as major recording acts?
- Real DJs using CDs (not ipods and laptops)?
- Experience and training of the actual crew on your event?
